Kiso No. 9 at Ardenwood
In 2024, the California State Railroad Museum Foundation approved the transfer of ownership of the Kiso No. 9 to the Society for the Preservation of Carter Railroad Resources. This transfer had been in the works for some time, and our museum’s staff were eager to move the locomotive to our facility to begin evaluation. The Kiso was stored on a standard gauge flatcar indoors at the former Sothern Pacific shop building. It was transferred to a truck for transport to Fremont, where it has made a few static appearances since its arrival.
Our initial evaluation of the No. 9 shows it is favorable for restoration. Henry Sorensen, along with his friends and family, preserved the locomotive’s mechanical systems with longevity in mind. Continuous indoor storage and minding has aided in keeping the locomotive in its 1999 condition. Mechanically, modifications to the locomotive were executed with skill and craftsmanship, and are built to last. Full details of the work required will be published in the forthcoming restoration report, which volunteers are actively working on.
Your support to bring this long dreamed about achievement to Ardenwood and SPCRR is greatly appreciated. With your contributions, we look forward to being able to offering steam-powered historical train rides to park guests in the near future. Ultimately, we hope to complete work before the locomotives 100th birthday in 2029. Please consider donating to our efforts by visting our donation website.
