ASARCO 2

Originally constructed as a 12-ton switching locomotive for the American Smelting and Refining Company (ASARCO) at their Selby, California refinery, where it served as Engine No. 2. The locomotive features a Detroit Diesel engine with hydraulic transmission. ASARCO modified the unit during its service life, adding two tons of steel plate ballast and installing a new engine, drive system, and torque converter.

Following the refinery's closure in 1971, the locomotive was sold to an equipment dealer. In 1973, Marriott Corporation acquired it for construction of the narrow-gauge railroad at what would become California's Great America theme park in Santa Clara. After assisting with track construction, it served as the park's backup locomotive until retirement to a siding in 1984.

The Society for the Preservation of Carter Railroad Resources (SPCRR) discovered the idle locomotive at Great America in 1996. The park donated the unit, delivering it to the museum the following day. Initial restoration proved challenging due to equipment limitations and vandalism damage, leading to the locomotive's sale.

In 2004, following complete rebuilding by Brooks Locomotive Works, the locomotive was shipped to Kauai Plantation Railway in Lihue, Hawaii, where it became their first locomotive and operated as No. 10, assisting with that line's construction. Deemed too small for regular operations, it was replaced with larger locomotives.

The locomotive returned to California in 2010, joining Roaring Camp & Big Trees Railroad, the state's steepest narrow-gauge railroad. However, age and exposure to Hawaii's salt air had taken their toll, rendering it unfit for service. It was sold to a private California owner in 2013.

When the SPCRR sought a larger locomotive for operations in 2014, a museum member who had performed the initial restoration pursued reacquisition. The locomotive returned to the museum in 2016. Brooks Locomotive Works later acquired the engine, and in 2017 the SPCRR leased it for passenger operations at Ardenwood Historic Farm. The locomotive is currently undergoing overhaul for service.
