South Pacific Coast 472
This is a standard Carter 28-foot, 10-ton boxcar built for the Oregonian Railroad in 1880 as car 230. It transferred to the South Pacific Coast in 1899 as number 472, then moved to the Nevada & California Railway in 1907 as car 443—you can still see that number inside the car today. After being scrapped in 1928, it became a shed in Sparks, Nevada. We acquired it in 1983 and put it to work as our first general store. We began formal restoration in 1993. The car now sits on 24-inch wheelsets that we cast using a NARF grant. It houses our static museum displays.
It was repainted and re-lettered in 2015, and is being repainted again in 2025.
