Arcata and Mad River Smoker 1
This passenger smoker car was built by Carter Brothers for the Arcata and Mad River Railroad (exact origin unclear—may have been purchased used). It was one of five passenger cars listed in a 1916 roster by A&MR, where it is listed as:
Smoker
No. 1; wood body and underframe; length over end sills 25’– 0”; 4 wheel arch bar trucks with 24” cast wheel; 3-1/2”x5” journals; oil lamps; stove; open platforms; purchased second hand. New cost $1,250.
After the A&MR switched to standard gauge, the car served as a caboose with an added cupola and became Northern Redwood Lumber 1. Later on, the car body was mounted on two different flatcars. Northern California narrow gauge collector Henry Sorenson donated it to SPCRR in 2006. The car is currently in storage awaiting restoration.
