Southern Pacific 1010
This car is a combine (originally built as a coach) constructed by the San Joaquin & Sierra Nevada Railroad at their Lodi, California shops in 1882. Its original number is unknown. When the Southern Pacific purchased the SJ&SN in 1885, they assigned it to the Northern Railway subsidiary as number 1010. The car moved to the South Pacific Coast in 1904 after the line was standard gauged, where it worked until 1907. It then transferred to the Nevada & California Railway as car 16. By late 1913, the car had been retired at Mina, Nevada and converted to housing for railroad workers.
Collector Richard Datin bought it in 1960 and sold it to SPCRR in 1990. After SPCRR restored it and installed Miller Couplers, the car became a star attraction at Railfair '99 in Sacramento—about 25,000 visitors walked through or rode in it during the event. Currently, the car is operable and is used as a walk-through museum piece demonstrating combine car layout. Due to being stored outdoors before our carbarn was built, the metal roof and wood siding require moderate restoration.
