Oakland Railroad 2
This single truck horse car was built by J. Hammond's California Car Works of San Francisco in 1887 for the Oakland Railroad, a South Pacific Coast subsidiary. It later worked on a Berkeley horse car line as number 8 before being converted into a children's playhouse. Bay Area rail historian Louis Stein rescued the car, restored it, and donated it to us. The original running gear had been lost when the car was scrapped and was temporarily replaced with rubber tires—which is how it appeared at BART's opening in 1970. SPCRR volunteers have completed the pattern work to restore its authentic railroad undergear. The car is currently in storage in good condition in our carbarn.
